Chiropractic History

Who discovered chiropractic?

Daniel David Palmer gave the first chiropractic adjustment on September 18, 1895.

Who was the first chiropractic patient?

Harvey Lillard, a janitor,  was the recipient of this first adjustment.

Why was he adjusted?

Harvey Lillard had been deaf for seventeen years.  He immediately became deaf when, exerting himself in a cramped, stooping position, he felt something give way in his back.  An examination showed a vertebrae out of its normal position (Subluxated). Dr. Palmer INNATELY knew that if the vertebrae was realigned, Harvey’s hearing should be restored.

Did he get results?

It is recorded that Harvey could not hear the racket of a wagon on the street or the ticking of a watch.  After the adjustment, Harvey’s hearing returned and this began the recorded history of chiropractic.

What other conditions responded to D.D.’s adjustments?

D.D. adjusted patients with diverse problems including flu, sciatica, migraine headaches, stomach complaints, epilepsy and heart problems.  Under his care, fevers broke, pain ended, infections healed, vision improved and stomach disorders disappeared.

“Chiropractors adjust subluxations, relieving pressure from the nerves so that they can perform their functions in a normal manner.  The INNATE can and will do the rest.” - B.J. Palmer, D.C.

Risking

Two seeds lay side by side in the fertile spring soil. The first seed said, “I want to grow!  I want to send my   roots deep into the soil beneath me, and thrust my sprouts through the earth’s crust above me...I want to feel the warmth of the sun on my face and the blessing of the morning dew on my petals!”  And so she grew. The second seed said, “I’m afraid.  If I send my roots into the ground below, I don’t know what I will find in the dark.  If I push my way through the hard soil above me I may damage my delicate sprouts. It’s much better for me to wait until it is safe.”  And so she waited. In the early spring, a hen scratching around for food found the waiting seed and promptly ate it.
