Up Your H2O Intake to Help Optimize Your Health

Woman holding a glass of waterWater is the most important element on our planet. Every living thing needs water to survive. Life would not exist without water, and wherever there is water, you will find life.

Your body is mostly made up of water, and it’s essential to keep your body functioning properly and feeling healthy. Nearly all of your body’s major systems depend on water to function and survive. You might be surprised by the effect staying hydrated has on your body.

Here are some important ways water works in your body:

  • Regulates body temperature
  • Moistens tissues in the eyes, nose and mouth
  • Protects body organs and tissues
  • Carries nutrients and oxygen to cells
  • Lubricates joints
  • Lessens the burden on the kidneys and liver by flushing out waste products
  • Helps dissolve minerals and nutrients to make them accessible to your body

Why Is Proper Hydration So Important for Our Brains?

Brain cells are 80% water. For an average person, a 2% reduction in body water levels is enough to cause a 20% decrease in mental and physical performance!

Proper hydration is essential for your brain, since it controls your nervous system, which controls everything in your body! As chiropractors, we focus on your nervous system, so when a problem occurs, don’t be surprised if we ask you how much water you drink every day.

If someone tells Dr. Jackie they have brain fog, she’ll tell them to up their daily intake of water to eliminate it. Dehydration also affects emotions and perspective, and may lead to headaches. She advises patients before they pop a headache remedy, drink a glass or two of water, and see what happens.

There’s also growing evidence that well-hydrated people tend to have better skin and hair. For those trying to lose weight, just about every list of tips suggests drinking a glass or two of water before meals. And, of course, you need proper hydration for healing to occur.

How Much Water Is Too Much?

Dr. Jackie advises patients that if they’re thirsty, they’re already dehydrated. She suggests everyone should drink half their body weight in ounces of water daily.

For those who believe this seems impossible, Dr. Jackie says, “Just think of how awesome you’re going to feel when you’re hydrated!” Full of energy and ready to take on any task!
